Master That Mix! An Introductory Guide To Equalization (EQ) In Logic Pro X

Updated: Mar 30

An equalizer, or EQ for short, is a device or plug-in used in audio production to adjust the balance between different frequencies of sound. It can be used to enhance certain aspects of the sound, remove unwanted frequencies, or simply adjust the overall sound of your recording. For vocals, EQ can be used to bring out the natural tone of a singer's voice, reduce unwanted background noise and resonance, or cut vocals out of the mix more effectively. EQ divides the frequency spectrum into different bands. It usually ranges from low frequencies (bass) to high frequencies (treble). Each band can be adjusted individually by boosting or cutting the level of that frequency range. For example, if you want to warm up a singer's voice, you can raise the center frequency by 1-3 kHz. Alternatively, if your vocal recording has too much sibilance (a harsh "s" or "sh" sound), you can roll off the high frequencies by 5-8 kHz.When working with vocals, it's important to keep in mind the natural frequency range of the human voice. In general, the low end of a male voice is around 80-200 Hz, while the high end of a female voice he can reach 12-15 kHz. However, every voice is unique, so it's important to listen carefully and adjust her EQ accordingly foe example a simple technique that was used by Harkaynian in his single "Is It Over" is a prime example of fine tuning the eq to shape and bring his vocals to life. A good starting point is to boost the broad and gentle midrange to bring out the natural timbre of the voice, then fine-tune to remove unwanted frequencies and resonances.A technique commonly used in vocal EQ is known as "notching". Narrow the frequency spectrum to remove specific frequency ranges that are causing problems. For example, if a particular sound in a vocal recording resonates uncomfortably, you can notch that frequency range to remove the resonance. Notching is a very effective way to clean up vocal recordings, but it requires careful listening and a good understanding of the frequency spectrum. In summary, EQ is a powerful tool for shaping the sound of vocals in your mix. By adjusting the balance of different frequency ranges, you can bring out the natural tone of your voice, reduce unwanted background noise and resonance, and help vocals cut through the mix more effectively.

Each DAW host's its own EQ as there are tons of plugin EQ's that accommodate different bands with realtime visualisation and different looks ie. digital or analogue interfaces.

Experiment with your available EQ's and have fun with the frequencies.
